9014 USGS—GPS Methods to Establish Vertical Datum (6 Hrs. Con. Ed. Cr.)
The course, USGS GPS Methods to Establish Vertical Datum provides instruction in the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) to obtain vertical elevations relative to a published vertical datum. Methods used by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are taught. The course materials consist of a booklet published by the USGS in 2012, entitled “Methods of Practice and Guidelines for Using Survey-Grade Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) to Establish Vertical Datum in the United States Geological Survey”. The course also includes a twenty-question examination prepared by David Melvin, PLS, CFM of Land Pro Seminars for evaluation and instructional purposes. Professional surveyors, engineers, and floodplain managers do well to emulate the methods used by the USGS in completing their mapping projects. (6 Hrs. Con. Ed. Cr.)
